Car Finance with No Credit History

Updated . General information, not financial advice.

Having no credit history isn’t the same as having bad credit, but it can still make car finance harder. Lenders have no record of how you manage credit, so they can’t easily judge the risk. This is common for young drivers, people new to the UK and anyone who has always paid cash. This guide explains your options.

In short

You may be able to get car finance with no credit history, but you may be offered a higher rate or a lower amount. Registering on the electoral roll, building a short credit record, saving a deposit or using a guarantor can all help. Some lenders specialise in first-time borrowers.

Why no credit history matters

Lenders use your credit file to see how you’ve handled credit before. With no history, often called a thin credit file, they have little to go on. Some will decline, and others will offer higher rates until you’ve built a record.

You’re more likely to have a thin file if you:

  • are young and haven’t had credit before
  • have recently moved to the UK
  • have always paid cash and never had a credit card, loan or phone contract
  • aren’t registered to vote at your current address

How to build a credit history

  1. Register on the electoral roll at your current address. It’s one of the simplest steps.
  2. Open a current account and keep it in good order.
  3. Consider a credit builder card, using it for small purchases and paying it off in full every month.
  4. Put bills in your name, such as a mobile phone contract or utilities.
  5. Check your credit files with Experian, Equifax and TransUnion to see what’s recorded.

Even six months of on-time payments can make a difference.

Ways to improve your chances now

  • Save a deposit. It reduces the amount you borrow and the lender’s risk.
  • Use a guarantor. Someone with good credit agrees to make the payments if you can’t. They need to understand the commitment.
  • Choose an affordable car. A lower amount is easier to approve.
  • Use eligibility checkers with soft searches, so failed applications don’t add hard searches to your file.
  • Show stable income and address history, with payslips and proof of address.

Important

First-time borrowers are sometimes offered high rates. Compare the total amount payable, and make sure the payments are comfortably affordable, including insurance, which can be expensive for young drivers.

Car finance for young drivers

Young drivers often have both a thin credit file and high insurance costs. Some manufacturers and lenders have deals aimed at first-time buyers. Before signing, add up the total monthly cost of the car, including finance, insurance, fuel, tax and servicing.

No credit history FAQs

Can I get car finance at 18?

Yes, you can apply from 18, but with no credit history you may find fewer lenders and higher rates. A deposit or guarantor can help.

Is no credit history worse than bad credit?

Usually not. With no history, lenders can’t see any problems, so building a short positive record can quickly improve your options.

How long does it take to build a credit history?

You can start building a record within a few months, but most lenders like to see at least six to twelve months of on-time payments.

Does a credit builder card really help?

It can, if you use it for small amounts and pay it off in full and on time every month.
