New car sales up 12% in September as electric cars hit a record

Published . General information, not financial advice.

September is one of the two biggest months for new cars, thanks to the new number plate. This year it was the strongest September since 2017, with electric cars taking a record share. Most new cars are bought on finance, so here’s what the figures mean if you’re thinking of changing your car.

In short

350,536 new cars were registered in September 2026, up 12% on last year, according to the SMMT. Electric cars made up 28.3% of the market. Private buyers rose 13.9%. Busy months can mean more offers, but compare the total cost of any finance deal, not just the monthly payment.

The numbers

According to the SMMT:

  • 350,536 new cars were registered in September 2026, up 12.0% on September 2025.
  • Battery electric cars took a 28.3% share, a record, and 26.2% so far this year.
  • 149,166 cars went to private buyers, up 13.9%.
  • Registrations so far this year are 1,739,271, up 10.2%.

What it means if you’re buying on finance

  • Expect manufacturer offers on EVs. Carmakers have targets for electric sales, so EVs often come with deposit contributions or low-APR finance. Check the total amount payable, as a low APR can come with a higher price.
  • PCP final payments depend on future values. Used electric car values have often fallen faster than petrol cars in recent years. The guaranteed final payment on a PCP protects you if the car is worth less at the end.
  • More cars coming off finance. Many people who bought on PCP three years ago are now reaching the end of their agreement. If that’s you, compare your car’s value with the final payment before deciding.

New car market FAQs

Is September a good time to buy a new car on finance?

It’s a busy month, with lots of offers, but dealers are also busy. Deals can be just as good in quieter months, especially near the end of a quarter.

Should I choose an electric car on PCP?

PCP can suit EVs because the guaranteed final payment protects you if used values fall. Factor in charging, insurance and, from April 2028, the pay-per-mile tax.
